Presentation Tips | Ion Teen Science Café

Are you interested in presenting scientific information but not quite sure how to increase your effectiveness? The Ion Science Café recommends that you introduce yourself to your audience through sharing your story. A hands-on science or technology related activity can help bring life and excitement to your interaction. Ion Science Café presentations focus on small groups, and below are some tips that may be useful. For more ideas, please send your inquiry to: inquiry@ionscience.org

Presentation Tips

Personal Stories: Share information about yourself. Keep in mind that attendees would like to know the nature of your work, and why you are excited about what you do. High resolutions images are useful in telling your story. Below are a few additional suggestions:

• Be charismatic

• Talk about personal interests, family, etc.

• Share your academic and career path

• Use simple language

• Discuss the broader impacts of your work

Hands-on Activity: The most successful teen science café presentations usually include a hands-on activity based on science, technology, and engineering.

Reflection: At the end of your presentation, try to provide an opportunity for attendees to reflect on the experience. Reflection is a great way to help others make important connections that will help them see a larger picture as it relates to your field of work.
